English William and Mary Period Chair c.1700

English William and Mary Period Chair, circa 1700

English William and Mary Period Chair c.1700
The William and Mary period of English furniture dates from 1689-1702. After assuming the throne, they imported truly comfortable furniture from Holland to England for the first time. The newly introduced upholstered style was well received by the common folk and caught on very quickly. This particular William and Mary chair, was previously owned by an executive of the Ford Motor Company, who was stationed in England and later moved to Switzerland, before retiring in the South of France in the small town of Albi, which was settled during the Bronze Age (3000-600 BC). He fancied himself as a collector of 17th century English furniture and after he passed away, we purchased this and several other 17th century items from the estate. The chair is exactly how it was removed from his home and I kind of like the old fabric and it happens to be very comfortable. **Seat height is 17"
