Antique French Directoire style buffet constructed from solid mahogany with brass accents. Our buyer discovered this incredibly original Directoire buffet in Cherbourg, France, which is located on the English Channel. Normally, we would have ebonized this antique French Directoire buffet, but the patina of the mahogany and beautiful grain of the wood, just inspired us to perform a sympathetic restoration and not refinish the buffet (which would have been much easier), but rather carefully clean and polish. The marble top does show its 200-year-old age, with numerous surface scratches and chips along the perimeter. However, the marble has never been broken or repaired. You will note that the back edge of the marble was cut by hand, which is a good indication of an older buffet. The original keys still function in the handmade locks. Please note that there are old repairs throughout and shown in the detail photos. The marble is heavily scratched and discolored in the middle (image 7). There are a couple of chips along the front edge and corners. The back of the marble is very rough (image 6). Left back leg is askew.
