Antique Painted Console Original Scagliola Top

Antique Italian Painted Console

Antique Painted Console Original Scagliola Top
Scagliola is a faux marble comprised of selenite (the crystalline form of gypsum), glue and pigment. The mixture is applied to a support in a marbleized pattern and sometimes includes chips of actual marble. When applied, the mixture is heated and polished. The technique dates back to Roman times. During the late 1600s it was revived and really began to flourish in the 1700s, particularly in Florence. We believe this antique Italian console dates from the late 1700s and we are not suggesting, that the paint is original, but clearly does have some age to it. This is the first piece with a Scagliola stone top we have ever had and I have to say that it weighs the same as real stone.
