Mount Airy, North Carolina, is probably best known as the birthplace of actor Andy Griffith and the fictional town of Mayberry. Mount Airy started during the 1750s as a stagecoach stop, between Winston-Salem and Galax. Major industries included, Mount Airy furniture and textiles. The early factories encompassed, Mount Airy Furniture Co, National Furniture Co. and the Mount Airy Mantel and Table Co. Mount Airy Furniture manufactured quality grade solid oak bedroom sets, desks, dressers and tables. In 1966 they merged with Mount Airy Chair, but on June the 9th 1997 the Mount Airy Furniture was completely destroyed by a major fire. After the fire they were bought out by Bassett Furniture and the name was eliminated. Mount Airy furniture to this day, remains highly desirable, because of its classic style and sturdy construction. Condition: Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. Nice original condition and lightly sun-faded. No prior repairs.
