French Louis XVI Commode

French Louis XVI Commode

French Louis XVI Commode
Antique French Louis XVI commode. King Louis XVI was born in August of 1754 and died the 21st of January 1793. The death of Louis XV in 1774, meant that his grandson, Louis XVI, at the young age twenty, became King of France. Louis XVI had little to no interest in the arts, however, his wife Marie-Antoinette, and her brothers-in-law, the Comte de Provence, were deeply interested in the arts and ordered massive amounts of furniture in a neoclassical style to be produced. The furniture of this period of time, was crafted by artisans who belonged to guilds, which strictly regulated their work. This particular antique French Louis XVI commode, we have listed on 1stdibs, we believe was built during the reign of Louis XVI, often referred to as époque, or during the “time” of. The drawers have a large single dove-tail and the drawer boxes themselves were made from white oak, while the carcass is constructed of walnut. Please note, that there is more than your average amount of wood beetle damage showing, but this French commode, as with all our antique furniture, is treated for insects, before restoration begins. Generally, a Louis XVI commode like this one, would get ebonized, but we did not have the heart to play with the original color, or patina of a 200 plus year old French Louis XVI commode. **Restored from the inside out. Please note that the marble has been repaired and the locks are missing.
