Louis XIII, 27 September 1601 to 14 May 1643 was King of France from 1610 to 1643. Henry IV was assassinated in 1610, his successor Louis XIII, was too young to take control, so it was Marie de' Medici, later the Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin ruled as regents. In this period the middle class became wealthy and as a result, demand for furniture makers drew Italian craftsmen to France. Thus, French country furniture began in earnest. Their rustic designs accurately reflected a more relaxed country life. The Sunburst pattern you see on our Louis XIII Bonnetiere, or small armoire, is very typical of the period and generally we will have matching sunburst buffets listed as well, for it is one of our favorite French designs. This particular antique French Louis XIII style Bonnetiere, or small armoire was probably made in the mid to late 1700’s and we left it pretty much as found. Structurally sound and cosmetically original. **Please note an old repair on the bottom right corner of the right drawer (image 12) and another old repair close to the bottom on the right side (image 17). There are also gaps in the wood in both doors and sides. Please pay close attention to all detail photos.
