Antique French Pottery or Gargoulette

Antique French Pottery or Gargoulette

Antique French Pottery or Gargoulette
Gargoulette - These dual spout drinking jugs originated about 5000 BC and later disappeared until after the Roman period, only to reappear as Catalan pottery in the 15th century. There are two main varieties: Summer with unglazed terracotta and the gargoulette called Winter, that are glazed to make waterproof. Occasionally, some Summer gargoulettes, are partially enameled over the handle and neck. When transported, the gargoulettes were hung on the animals back, or on the side of the cart, to limit the risk of breakage, which helps explains the large handle. This particular example is one of the best looking vessels we have ever offered for sale.
