Carboy's originate from the Persian word; qarabah, while demijohn comes courtesy of the French for dame-jeanne, or Lady Jane and derives from the 17th century. Demijohn's refer to any large glass vessel, with a small neck capable of holding from 5 and 16 gallons of liquid.
