This is a very old French bergere chair in great old paint, that no one has touched for a long time. There is no real way to determine if the chair was born this was, but if it wasn't, it certainly was painted over 100 years ago.
The expert at the auction house in France where the chair was purchased described it as being époque, which translates to being from the period of Louis XV, and not just in the style of Louis XV. We made our production date on the conservative side, since we have no written documentation. The upholstery, although mohair, can best be described as beyond dirty. Now that being said, years ago we had a carpet steam cleaning company steam a mohair sofa our dog lived on, and it came out beautiful. In this case, that might be a stretch. This is a beautiful never restored, comfortable armchair with a down filled seat, that only requires new upholstery, and our in house upholster would be only too happy to install your fabric. Patina does not come much better than this, and we have two slightly smaller matching Louis XV chairs for sale on 1stdibs as well.
** Seat height is 17.5"
