Pair Antique English His & Her Windsor Chairs

Pair Antique English His & Her Windsor Chairs
Magnificent pair of early 1800s English broad armed elm and oak his and her Windsor chairs. In a much earlier time, it was quite the norm to have his and her chairs, with the larger supposedly always his. This pair has been in our store owner's personal collection for many years, however due to downsizing she must reduce the size of her collection. One of the most popular designs of chairs in both England and America, the form was believed to have originated in the vicinity of Windsor Castle around 1700 and continued being made until the late 19th Century. English examples typically have a pierced splat flanked by turned spindles, splayed legs and use various woods including elm, oak, ash, and yew. The measurements shown are for his chair. Her chair is 43.5" high, 26.5" long and 27" deep. Seat height is 17". England circa 1820
