On Saturday, July 24, 1915, thousands gathered by the Chicago River for the annual Western Electric's 5th employee picnic. The S.S. Eastland ("Speed Queen of the Great Lakes"), was part of five boats to take their employees and friends to Michigan City, Indiana for a day of activities. While docked at the Clark Street Bridge, the Eastland never left the Chicago River. Tragedy happened as the Eastland rolled over at the wharf. Over 2500 people and crew members were on board and 844 tragically died.
