Description
An important pair of early Art Deco cube-form chairs attributed to one of the leading designers of French Art Deco, Andre Leon Arbus. The sides of the chairs feature a wonderful book-matched veneer of burl amboyna, an exotic wood native to Southeast Asia. We have restored these chairs to the original condition, installing new springs and cream-colored leather. Remarkably, we have the original receipt of purchase dating to 1926, which shows that these chairs were part of a bedroom suite. These chairs have great provenance, and are truly a work of art. The clean lines of Arbus' designs were greatly inspired by the stylized classicism of the French Empire style. Arbus was known for using luxurious veneers in his pieces, as exemplified by the beautiful woods used in these spectacular chairs.
