Description
A Napoleon III white painted bonnetiere with silver leafing featuring bonnet shaped cornice with cartouche crest. Carved foliage flanks the upper crest and adorns the upper frieze. The single paneled eglomise painted mirror door, with firefly and cattail design, opens to reveal storage space and is framed at the top with acanthus leaf motif. The piece rests on shaped block feet. Circa 1880, France. The eglomise technique is a French type of glass decoration in which gold leaf or paint is applied to the back of the glass and then protected with another layer of material, particularly glass, metal, or foil. A traditional and time-honored technique from the ancient Roman times, eglomise became very popular in the eighteenth century.
