Description
An important Art Nouveau mahogany display cabinet featuring a shaped centered cornice of curved and flowing lines above three glass-paneled doors with original whiplash pull handles and naturalistic escutcheons. The lower drawer bank is comprised of three drawers with figured mahogany veneered panels and ormolu floral-motif pulls above a curved plinth. Circa 1900, France. The piece is signed on back exterior "Louis Majorelle." Featured and documented in the catalog Masterpieces of Art Nouveau Furniture: The Majorelle Catalogue 1910. Louis Majorelle, along with Emile Galle, were pioneers of the French Art Nouveau movement. Characteristic of the Art Nouveau style were sinuous curves, flowing lines, and organic imagery of flowers, leaves, and insects. The curvaceous elements of the display cabinet are typical of Majorelle’s Nouveau style. The decorative ormolu mounts in his pieces typically represent the plants and flowers native to Lorraine.
